San Antonio

A couple of weeks ago, when the schools were out due to THE OINK scare (the swine flu) Brandon and I headed down to San Antonio.  Our mission:  visit my cousin Linzie, check out my brother’s new house, eat lots of food.  Being on a photographer schedule, we woke up late and started packing.  So we didn’t really get onto the road until about 2:30 pm.  That’s ok cause I had my turquoise basket of snacks filled with the essentials:  beef sticks, Cheese-Its, Fruit Loops, Skittles and hmm… Brandon had a Hershey’s Bar.  He never did eat the Hershey’s Bar and it melted on the way home – must have been in the sun.  I’m happy to report he eventually ate it.

So we hit the road, opting to bypass I-35 and it’s ugly, ugly traffic – taking the smaller highway through the country.  Stopped in at Marble Falls to eat at the Blue Bonnet Cafe.  About an hour and a half before Marble Falls I started talking about how I wanted to eat somewhere with homemade pie.  I’ve seen that sign before on previous trips so I knew it would be coming.  Brandon had no idea though, so I acted all surprised and giddy about homemade pie and how we MUST stop there.  Yeah, I’m crafty.  We eat some food and order pies and of course I’m a little piggy and can’t even eat it all.  The chocolate meringue was delish and the meringue sky high.  We finally arrive at my brother’s house just north of San Antonio to check out the new pool and hot tub.

After that it was off to meet up with my awesome cousin Linzie.  This girl rocks!  She and I are like two peas in a pod.  She’s super sweet and lets us crash at her apartment.  We decide to go to the Taco Cabana at 12:30 am for some grub.  The next day we have full intentions of taking lots of pictures but it doesn’t quite happen.  It’s smokin’ hot in San Antonio and we’re kinda sluggish and slow moving.  The day is kinda a blur.  Hmph.  Well anyway, we ended going all over the place:  Linzie had to take us to an old fashioned soda fountain, a popcorn store (where we sampled all kinds of flavors) and of course we hit some awesome vintage stores and thrift stores.  We also stumbled into the McNay Art Museum on Thursday early evening (free!) and had some fun around there.

Knowing my obsession about cupcakes – Linzie took us to Kate’s Frosting.  What can I say?  It was a cupcake and was pretty good but we agreed The Cupcake Cottage still wins hands down!  Ohh, ate at Chris Madrid’s and we all got the cheesy cheese burger.  Woah.  It was A LOT of cheese.

Later we ate dinner with my brother and his family at Chuy’s Mexican Food.  Sat in the Elvis booth.  Oh and we went to the Alamo and took a picture of Mad Tater on the lawn.  People thought is was so funny.  I’m sure I looked a bit odd whipping out a potato head toy out of the camera bed and sticking him past the chain.  Yes, behind the chain how daring!  The security guy just stood all stoic and watched.  I think he laughed a little, but I’m not sure.

The Places:

Blue Bonnet Cafe

Chris Madrid’s

Olmos Soda Fountain

Papa Deans Popcorn

McNay Art Museum

Kate’s Frosting

Redemption Garb

Chuy’s

The Crew:

Linzie - Brandy’s fabulous cousin

Eddie, Lisa + kids – Brandy’s brother and family

I got all excited when I found something that might bring back old memories from Brandon’s ice skating days (yes, people Brandon was an ice skater!!) and we took a couple of pictures at the Boys Town Thrift store and this old lady was really grouchy told me to stop taking pictures and asked if I had a note.  What?!?  We’re in high school?? haha!

Mad Tater, in front of the Alamo.  The guard was watching us, no one was allowed to go past the chain, but apparently Mad Tater could.

McNay Art Museum

It’s art baby!

My brother and the family – excited about the Elvis booth and for some Tex-Mex!

I am not a fan of selective coloring but for Elvis and his taco, I’ll make an exception.

Buzz, the ferret.  This little guy cracked me up.  Yes, he’s a kleptomaniac and yes, he’s obsessed with t-p and paper towels.

Blue bonnet cafe is the BEST!!! I am sooo glad y’all went there! We have a lake on HSB and go there every time we are in the area! My favorite pie is the peanut butter pie-oh so yummy!

Hey Brandy your “Daily Pop” about the San Antonio trip was fun to read. That sounded like a fun trip! I’ve always wanted to go through the Hill Country to San Antonio. I haven’t been down that way since I was 7 or 8 yrs old! I read about your cupcake obsession. Since you love them so much I’m sure you’ve heard of “Sprinkles” cupcakes in the Highland Park area in Dallas. Those are the best cupcakes I’ve ever had! If you haven’t let me know and I’ll get you the address. Y’all have a great week and I’ll holler at ya laterz!

I’ve heard of Sprinkles but we haven’t had them yet. Whenever you do go to Hill Country be sure to eat at the Salt Lick. we haven’t been there either, but it’s supposed to be the best BBQ :)
